On the Records

Exploring the news, one song at a time.

Jun 4
Last spring, while driving from Indianapolis to Chicago on the Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds Highway, I conceived of a simple website that would pair good reads with good records. After a few emails, some research, and a little tinkering, On the Records was born. We’re now 235 posts deep, and we’ve reached our very first birthday.
To mark this rather arbitrary passage of time, we’ll spend the week highlighting our favorite posts from the year. But first, I want to thank a number of important friends of the program who have spread the OtR gospel (somewhat?) far and (reasonably?) wide:
The reads: The Atavist, the Columbia Journalism Review, Longform, Longreads, and the Los Angeles Review of Books.
The writes (and edits): Ben Cohen, Brian Cook, Adam Doster, Andy Hutchins, Brendan Koerner, Aaron Lammer, Erin Polgreen, and Pablo Torre.
Also, shouts to these guys for providing a number of tremendous records (unknowingly): Matthew Africa, Holy Soul, Andrew Noz, Dan Samiljan, Straight Grallin, and Oliver Wang.
We hope some of you enjoyed Year One and a few more jump on board for Year Two.
Now go read a book, you illiterate son of a bitch, and step up your vocab.
